What is Rock Steady Boxing (RSB)?

Rock Steady at The Social enables people with Parkinson’s disease to fight their symptoms by providing non-contact boxing-style fitness programs that improve their quality-of-life, sense of efficacy and self-worth. Is there medical evidence that shows this program can alleviate Parkinson’s symptoms?

Yes. The value of exercise has been corroborated in several studies, including some at Lakehead University in Ontario and University of Utah in Salt Lake City. According to a Cleveland Clinic study, aerobic fitness can be improved in Parkinson’s patients following forced and/or voluntary exercise. Studies are showing that exercise induces brain repair and accompanying behavioral recovery. Some suggest that continuous, intensive training may confer neuro-protection, and subsequently slow, stop, or reverse the progression of Parkinson’s or promote neuro-restoration.

Because of the promising results seen through RSB, the organization has been selected to be a part of research to document the impact of boxing and rigorous exercise on the progression of Parkinson’s. RSB has also drawn the attention of local university researchers, who are now in the process of quantifying and evaluating the results in the people who have continued with RSB.

Before beginning any type of exercise program including RSB, those with Parkinson’s are encouraged to consult with their physician.

What are workouts like?

Training classes include an exercise program that attacks Parkinson’s at its vulnerable neurological points. Our classes are taught by certified Rock Steady Boxing coaches. While focusing on overall fitness, workouts include: ring work, focus mitts, heavy bags, speed bags, double-ended bags, jump rope, core work, calisthenics and circuit weight training. Workouts include strength training flexible reaction time, balance, core work, high intensity training, focus mitts and circuit weight training. Our coaches also work with our boxers on voice activation (being loud) and fine motor skills. No boxing experience is necessary and people of all ages are invited to participate.  There are four different levels of classes offered, depending on the participants level of Parkinson’s and over-all fitness.

Rock Steady Boxing classes have proven that anyone at any level of Parkinson’s disease can lessen their symptoms. Our boxers have exhibited improvements in their balance, coordination, tremors, strength and happiness.

Do I need Physician’s permission to attend this program?

We require every participant to have a physician’s release and Rock Steady Boxers should always discuss any form of exercise they are doing inside and outside of Rock Steady Boxing with their physicians as part of their overall wellness plan. We also request that individuals with cardiac problems clear their participation with their doctors to make sure that they can participate in activities requiring rigorous exercise, or if they require modifications in class.

How do I participate?

Individuals of all ages are benefiting from our Rock Steady Boxing program. Prior to participating in their first class, individuals must have their doctor complete a medical release and attend a 30 minute intake assessment by one of our trainers. Individual Levels will be assigned during this assessment. The cost of this assessment is $15.00 payable to the assessing trainer. Some participants will require a caregiver partner to assist in each session.

What equipment do I need?

Gloves and gel wraps are required equipment, and we are happy to assist you in purchasing. We strongly suggest bringing a towel and your own water source to stay hydrated. The Social’s Health & Wellness Center does have a water fountain.

What are the costs?

The initial Assessment cost is $15.00 and is paid directly to the assessing trainer. Sessions are $5.00 per class, with punch cards ($15.00 for 3 classes | $60.00 for 12 classes) available for purchase. Punch cards are kept on file in the gym for your convenience.
